The Benefits Of Using Recycled Plastic

533 351 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

Playgrounds are arguably the heart of the school. It’s where friendships are made, where social skills are tested and where invaluable lessons are learned. As we know, spending more time outdoors is beneficial for both the child’s mental and physical health, as well as helping with their social skills and even their learning. Therefore, Marmax are keen to encourage schools across the UK to make outdoor education more of a priority.

At Marmax, we use recycled plastic lumber to build all of our furniture and play equipment. We believe that recycled plastic makes the best furniture for playgrounds due to the nature of HDPE plastic, they’re highly durable, making them perfect for the wear and tear furniture receives.

As well as being able to survive the vigorous testing children put our products through, our products can also be left outside all year round. Able to withstand heavy rain, sunshine, wind and even snow, our recycled plastic furniture is perfect for teachers that don’t have the resources to move large furniture and play equipment around daily.

Our furniture and play equipment, all made from recycled plastic, is also maintenance free, and graffiti can be easily removed, making the products look newer for longer. By being robust and maintenance free, not only are the recycled plastic products safer for the children to use, but they also mean that busy teachers don’t need to worry about their upkeep.

Aside from the practical nature of products made from recycled plastic bottles, the products also save thousands of plastic bottles from landfill. By buying recycled plastic furniture, schools are able to save plastic from landfill and help protect the environment and all the animals that inhabit our land and oceans. Our products act as a starting point in the conversations surrounding the importance of recycling, helping to educate future generations and create a greener future.

5 Easy Steps for Earth Day

638 480 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

Sunday 22nd April 2018 was Earth Day, and this year’s campaign is all about raising awareness of the issues of plastic pollution. Here at Marmax, we’ve already saved a quarter of a billion plastic milk containers from landfill by turning them into recycled plastic furniture, however we know that everyone can do more.

Ditch the straws

There was public outcry on Twitter when popular pubs and bars began to go plastic free but with the UK alone estimated to use 8.5 billion straws a year it’s an essential step to combat plastic pollution. If a straw is completely necessary, try a paper or metal one – they all do the same job!

Reusable carrier bag

After the introduction of the 5p plastic bag charge in October 2015, single-use carrier bag sales have dropped by 83%. We understand that you can get caught short without a bag for the quick supermarket trips, so just keep a reusable bag in the car.

Bring your own cup

The inner lining of most takeaway cups is made from polyethylene which is not widely recycled. Major coffee retailers now run initiatives where you can get a discounted drink if you bring your own tumbler. Saving the environment while getting discounted coffee – what’s not to love?

Plastic free veg

It frustrates every environmentalist out there, wrapping fruit and veg in plastic. Make a conscious decision to only buy fruit or veg that’s not in a plastic wrap.

Research recycling

We know that a plastic-free lifestyle is hard to achieve so it’s important that you know what can and can’t be recycled. Do research on what your local recycling centre accepts and take it from there.

Just taking these five steps in your everyday life can start to impact our Earth’s future and work towards a cleaner, greener future.

Marmax Recycled Products reach Quarter of a Billion Milestone!

800 800 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

We’re pleased to announce that we have saved a quarter of a billion plastic milk containers from going to landfill!

By preventing so many plastic bottles from going to landfill, we’re helping to reduce the impact plastic has on our environment. Quite often, plastics (everything from carrier bags, to straws, to plastic bottles) end up being blown into our seas and oceans which is hugely problematic. Marine life is being harmed everyday by the sheer scale of plastic that is in the oceans, so by doing our bit in reducing the amount of plastic that ends up in our oceans, we’re helping to safeguard both our oceans and the animals that live there.

Why Plastic Enters Our Oceans

533 351 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

Can you imagine there being more pieces of plastic in the sea than number of fish?

Sounds absurd, doesn’t it? Every year, 12 million tonnes of plastic is dumped into our oceans, that’s the equivalent of one truck’s worth every minute, and if we don’t change our habits, by 2050 we’ll have more plastic than fish in the oceans. Of the entire world’s plastic waste, only 5% is effectively recycled and around 40% ends up in landfill. So, how does so much waste end up in our fragile ecosystems?

Around 80% of the plastic in the ocean comes from land-based activities, like the carrier bag you threw away, the waste you left on the street or the cotton bud you flushed. Bad habits, alongside poor management at landfill sites, cause plastics to find their way into our drainage systems, rivers and eventually oceans.

Carrier bags dumped at landfill sites can be picked up in a breeze, carried to a nearby river and will eventually end up in our oceans. You can’t usually put them in your normal recycling bin, however, most major supermarkets run collections of carrier bags.

Littering and incorrect flushing of products has a major impact on marine life. Wind and rain carry the waste to drainage systems and rivers which then flow into the sea. Little changes really help, such as holding onto your plastic bottle until you have access to recycling facilities – it also allows companies like us to turn them into something useful (like our award-winning recycled plastic furniture!).

Here at Marmax we’re passionate about changing the future of our planet by recycling plastic bottles into outdoor furniture – we’ve already saved 2.5 billion milk containers from landfill!

The Process of Bottle to Bench

1024 768 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

After the compelling Blue Planet 2 series, and this year’s plastic pollution focused Earth Day, there is a growing concern about plastic filling our oceans and harming marine life. By tossing newspapers, plastic cartons and aluminium cans into the same bin it’s now possible for hundreds of products to be manufactured. So, once you’ve thrown your plastic bottle into the blue bin, what happens next?

Many councils now run a single stream recycling program which means that you can mix your materials and they’ll all end up at a Materials Recycling Facility (MRF) to be sorted and cleaned. The waste is tipped onto a huge conveyer belt where magnets, scanning systems and a little bit of physics are used to decipher the newspapers from the tin cans and eventually out the other end come plastics and glass.

An optical scanning system is then used to spot the plastics and a blast of air pushes them into a bin below. They’re then sorted by their resin code, which is the little logo on the back of plastic with a number and chasing arrows. Here at Marmax, we’re interested in the #2 plastics.

Once sorted by resin number, the plastic gets pushed through a shredder to turn it into flake-like pieces which are then baled into a polymer pellet. These plastic pellets are then sent off to companies around the UK who manufacture them into useful products, like plastic timber planks. These planks are then delivered to us so that we can make our award-winning furniture.

When you buy a recycled plastic bench from Marmax you’re saving over 2000 milk bottles from landfill and also investing in a sturdy piece of outdoor furniture that comes with a 25 year guarantee. You’re also helping to work towards closing the loop on recycling, eventually leading to being able to eliminate the need for virgin materials – so do your bit today and pop your plastic bottle in the blue bin.

The Beast from the East is no match for Marmax Benches

920 600 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products
We know you’re probably fed up of hearing about #thebeastfromtheeast, but the freezing temperatures and substantial snowfall has been putting even our products to the test!
When wooden furniture gets damp, the wood absorbs the water and swells, then when the temperatures drops dramatically, the wood cracks and splinters, making the furniture unsightly and even dangerous to use. This doesn’t happen to recycled plastic.
Marmax products are all made from 100% HDPE recycled plastic, meaning the award-winning furniture is rot resistant and will not corrode or splinter, making the furniture not only more resilient to bad weather, but also safer to use. Hundreds of wooden benches across the country will have been broken by the snow, ice and rain we’ve had over the past couple of weeks, but not Marmax’s products.
As well as being able to withstand even the Beast from the East, Marmax furniture also comes with a 25-year construction guarantee and saves hundreds (if not thousands!) of plastic bottles from landfill.
So, whether it’s school playground equipment, outdoor furniture for parks, or dog agility equipment, The Beast from the East is no match for Marmax Recycled Products!

Ocean Waste – How we can make it a thing of the past!

396 360 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

Our oceans and the sea life in it are a vital source to everyday life. 70% of the oxygen we breathe is produced by plants that live in the seas. The oceans are fundamentally tied to our health and livelihoods…but pollution has our oceans on the brink of disaster!

Plastic does not break down as fast as other waste and takes approximately 450 years to degrade, and then they do not go away completely.
They break down into smaller and smaller pieces meaning that more sea life is not only being harmed by plastic waste, they are now ingesting it. This can also be very harmful to us as this plastic will eventually end up on our plates.
What we do on land can change the fate of what goes on offshore, and small mistakes in waste disposal can have a large impact on everyone’s health and wellbeing.
Here at Marmax Products, we are very passionate about recycling the plastic waste and making it into maintenance free, award winning outdoor furniture and play equipment for playgrounds and outdoor spaces. This saves millions of tonnes of plastic waste from landfill and our oceans, at the same time making products that people can appreciate and use for generations to come. Once the product come to the end of its life, we are able to recycle the product back into the process and make new products for the future.

2018 – What are your New Year’s Resolutions?

150 150 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products

Here at Marmax, we love that ‘New Year feeling’. It’s a fresh start and the perfect time to set some new goals for the year ahead. We thought we’d share some of our resolutions to try and give you a little inspiration, should you need it.

1. Getting healthy. With the Christmas period over, it’s fair to say most us have over indulged in just one or two (or five) mince pies. With the whole of 2018 laying ahead of us, now is the perfect time to get you and your family fit and healthy. Marmax’s Goal Wall or Balance Beams are the perfect way to get the whole family involved whilst running around, having fun and getting fit.
2. Reducing Waste. If you spent the Christmas period watching Blue Planet 2, chances are you’re now feeling a little guilty about the damage humans have caused to the ocean. Why not consider reducing your plastic consumption as part of your New Year’s resolutions?  By buying products made from recycled plastic, that are recyclable themselves, you’re supporting closed loop recycling – meaning less plastic ends up in landfill and less is made in the first place!
3. Getting outdoors more.  Whether it’s going for walks in the wilderness, or just stopping to smell the roses more often, the scientific benefits of spending more time outside have been proven.  Therefore, pop on your wellies, zip up your coat and get walking. When you need a rest, our range of outdoor benches are the maintenance free, stylish and comfy for when you need to rest your weary legs.
Whether you’re wanting to get fit, spend more time with family or friends, or take life a little slower, we hope that you’re as excited by the prospect of 2018 as we are, and wish you all the best for your resolutions, whatever they may be.

Key Advantages of Using Recycled Plastic Furniture.

150 150 Marmax Recycled Plastic Products
Although we might be a little biased, we think recycled plastic is the future of outdoor furniture. We thought we’d give you some of the main reasons why recycled plastic makes for perfect outdoor furniture.
1. It’s maintenance-free. Recycled plastic is extremely easy to care for. Outdoor products made from wood need regular staining, sealing and maintenance, however, a recycled plastic bench can be left without any intervention for years.
2. It’s waterproof. In England, rain is almost a daily occurrence. Any piece of furniture left outside needs to be hardy enough to cope with rainfall. Wood is naturally porous, meaning that when a bench gets damp, water is absorbed. This leads to splitting, warping and twisting, rendering the furniture useless after only a short while. Recycled plastic is nonporous. Water is unable to penetrate the plastic, meaning the furniture doesn’t split, warp or twist, and the bench can simply be wiped dry.
3. It’s durable. Due to wood swelling and shrinking over time, the material is then prone to splintering and breaking. This can be dangerous for both children and adults and can lead to injury. Due to the hardy nature of recycled plastic, the furniture does not splinter, crack or corrode. This makes recycled plastic furniture much safer for both children and adults to use.
4. It can last a lifetime. Wooden furniture doesn’t stay usable for very long, and needs to be replaced every few years. However, our products come with a 25-year construction guarantee, and the majority of our products last a lifetime.
If we’ve managed to persuade you that recycled plastic makes for amazing furniture, why not check out our extensive range of recycled furniture and equipment. We make Picnic Tables, Outdoor Seating, Benches, Garden Planters, Fencing, Bins, Playground Equipment and so much more, all from recycled plastic here in the UK.
