Sunday 22nd April 2018 was Earth Day, and this year’s campaign is all about raising awareness of the issues of plastic pollution. Here at Marmax, we’ve already saved a quarter of a billion plastic milk containers from landfill by turning them into recycled plastic furniture, however we know that everyone can do more.
Ditch the straws
There was public outcry on Twitter when popular pubs and bars began to go plastic free but with the UK alone estimated to use 8.5 billion straws a year it’s an essential step to combat plastic pollution. If a straw is completely necessary, try a paper or metal one – they all do the same job!
Reusable carrier bag
After the introduction of the 5p plastic bag charge in October 2015, single-use carrier bag sales have dropped by 83%. We understand that you can get caught short without a bag for the quick supermarket trips, so just keep a reusable bag in the car.
Bring your own cup
The inner lining of most takeaway cups is made from polyethylene which is not widely recycled. Major coffee retailers now run initiatives where you can get a discounted drink if you bring your own tumbler. Saving the environment while getting discounted coffee – what’s not to love?
Plastic free veg
It frustrates every environmentalist out there, wrapping fruit and veg in plastic. Make a conscious decision to only buy fruit or veg that’s not in a plastic wrap.
We know that a plastic-free lifestyle is hard to achieve so it’s important that you know what can and can’t be recycled. Do research on what your local recycling centre accepts and take it from there.
Just taking these five steps in your everyday life can start to impact our Earth’s future and work towards a cleaner, greener future.
