Creating space for environmental learning, Doorway 5 of the Sustainable Schools Strategy encourages schools to maximise their potential, not only by teaching pupils about sustainable development, but by using the fabric of the school to demonstrate sustainable living to pupils, staff and the wider community.

Marmax Products outdoor classroom has been developed as a stand alone environmental area. This space creates an area for environmental learning, practicing eco policies and activities supporting the Eco Schools International programme which aims to help children become more effective citizens by encouraging them to take responsibility for the future of their own environment.

Built to a very high specification using 100% UK recycled HDPE plastic – the plastic originally used to make milk containers – for the roof, sides and seating. The floor, also made from the same material, has a unique WRAP approved slip resistant finish, ensuring good grip in all weather conditions. All supported, for maximum strength and durability, by a galvanised steel frame.

Sarah Ellingworth, Treasurer PTA of Welwyn St Mary’s C of E Primary School said, “Our classroom fits beautifully into our outdoor space next to the trees and nature reserve. It is a multi-purpose room as it is used by the children at playtimes for role playing as well as a classroom, its primary purpose. The addition of this classroom has transformed our use of the outdoor space at the back of our school and given us the capability to have outdoor lessons more easily. The classroom is a magnificent addition to the school.”
